One + One is a self-published independent journal with a team of writers who are active participants in a non-profit, non-commercial venture. We are self-funded and write for the love of our subject rather than for personal financial gain.
Articles can be theoretical or practical but it must be informed by a filmmaking perspective. We are not 5 stars reviews based, we believe and want to encourage a thorough and critical analysis of film and its social and cultural effects and implications. You should not write from a consumer perspective, or as just a theorist. All articles should at some level be influenced by the act of filmmaking to a greater or lesser extent. We encourage a wide variety of articles whether autobiographical, journalistic, historical, philosophical, socio-political or whether they are manifestos or interviews. However the perspective of the filmmaker, as a theme, is of central importance. All articles should cover at least one of the topics listed below.
- Critical examinations of filmmaking; its craft, process or social context. This may concern either independent self-financed filmmaking or the film industry and film-funding.
- Social issues in films
- Film as part of a "Revolution in Progress"
- Underrated or under-acknowledged filmmakers or acknowledged filmmakers who have radically and experimentally broken boundaries in some way.
Word length
The word count is negotiable but we usually look for articles under 3000 words. A proposal of approximately 300 words should be sent before an essay idea is finalised. This should be accompanied by a brief CV for first time writers.
Footnotes
Whilst we try to minimalism footnotes, we simultaneously understand the need to give respect and acknowledgement. References should be given either within the text or as a footnote. Footnotes should not contain masses of unnecessary information and should be straight to the point. Writers should not footnote works they haven’t read or are not necessary to the text. The smaller the better!
The House style for One+One is:
- Slavoj Zizek, Enjoy Your Symptom!: Jacques Lacan in Hollywood and Out, New York, 2007, pp. 26-7
- Sergei Eisenstein, ‘Through Theatre to Cinema’, in Robert Knopf, ed., Film and Theatre: A Comparative Anthology, New York, 2005, pp. 239

Legal and Financial
Articles should not have been published prior to One+One. Any later re-publication should be done after dialogue with the editorial board and should credit One+One as the original source. One+One reserves the right to republish articles in later collections and anthologies.
We are a non-profit group, we are all working on this as an unpaid collaboration so we can not offer any pay at the moment. Writers will be sent copies of the journal and gain exposure for their work. Some of our writers have been offered paid work from other magazines after their work was seen in One+One.
Finally…
